Storing Holiday Decorations

Christmas decorations in boxes

After the holiday season, you likely just want to take a collective sigh of relief when the hustle and bustle finally settles down. Although your calendar may suddenly be less chaotic, the clutter of festive decorations in your home may still be lingering. Getting your home back to normal may seem overwhelming, especially when all you really want to do is go into hibernation, but starting the new year with a tidy home will help jump start any other resolutions you may have. The task can seem more manageable when you have a plan for the most efficient ways for storing holiday decorations.

Plastics totes on shelf

Plastic Totes

Utilizing sturdy totes is essential when storing all your holiday decorations in a safe and organized way. Although cardboard may be used for protecting individual decorations, it’s not intended to be reused and will become less durable over time. Begin by labelling all totes with the intended contents. This will be a benefit year after year when you pull the totes out of storage. You can easily determine in which room it needs to go and you will learn to more effectively position the contents within in tote. Packing items from the same room together will reduce the stress of remembering where items are displayed. Distribute heavier items throughout multiple totes to avoid having one tote that is difficult and potentially dangerous to carry.

Fragile decorations

Fragile Decorations

You may have ornaments and other collectibles which are very fragile, and possibly irreplaceable; therefore, it is important to store those in a way that ensures they are not damaged. Place the ornaments in plastic drink cups and stack them in totes using a piece of cardboard between layers. This will minimize the chance of ornaments getting broken by rubbing against each other or being crushed. Wrap coffee mugs and other breakable item in unused tissue paper for padding.

String of lights on a roll

Lights

The lights always seem to be the most frustrating decoration to store (and take out of storage,) which is why they are the most important to organize. When you hang lights on a tree, it is easier to position and make adjustments to them if you start at the top, therefore when you put them in storage, you should start with the end that plugs into the wall. If you don't have a light spool, use a piece a cardboard and roll the lights along with a layer plastic wrap around it. The cardboard will give it some structure so the lights aren’t crushed in storage and the plastic wrap prevents the lights from getting tangled.

Organization

As you are getting everything safely packed into containers, it’s important to keep the organization. You will find that it is easier every year to be have a system when packing decorations. Maintaining this consistency will also help ensure that you don’t mistakenly leave out some decorations.

After you have packed away the remnants of the holiday season, you should find a dedicated space to keep all containers together. Depending on the scale of your decorations, it may not be practical to move multiple totes to an off-site storage facility and your attic or basement space may not be suitable for some decorations, as they may be difficult to maneuver on stairs or through tight doorways. A Rent to Own storage building can provide you with an easier storage option with large, accessible openings and spacious overhead lofts which are conveniently located on your property.
