People helping people best describes the cooperative mission and foundation of BUCM. Our desire is to demonstrate the love of Christ by providing food, clothing, and other emergency assistance to individuals and families in crisis.
Our MissionThe mission of Burke United Christian Ministries is to put compassion in action by providing food, clothing, housing, and essentials to people in need.
BUCM HistorySince 1975, BUCM has extended a helping hand to many residents and transients of Burke County through the assistance of food, clothing, shelter, heat/fuel, medicine, and other necessities. Our Christian foundation is built on the command given by Jesus Christ. Our ministry is a private, non-profit corporation operated by a Board of Directors. BUCM represents the cooperative efforts of over 90 Burke County churches, United Way, civic organizations, and numerous individuals working together to help the underprivileged in ministry. Without the combined efforts of all, no single organization could provide the services offered by BUCM.
People are served on the basis of need, income level, and other available resources. Persons requiring assistance may apply directly during office hours. Applicants will be interviewed to determine eligibility and assessment of needs. All information will be kept confidential. The center is open to the public: 9:00-12:00; 12:30-4:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; and 9:00-12:00 on Wednesday. BUCM is on call 24 hours daily to respond to emergencies. We accept all referrals from the community by local authorities, churches, and social service organizations.
