Salem Church
Mission Statement
To invite all people into the presence of God so that they may come to know Jesus and through worship experience His love and healing.
Description
Salem church is made up of Christians from many different backgrounds and many diverse theological opinions. Still, we are Bible centered and seek to live well within the behavioral bounds of traditional Christianity.
WHAT DOES JESUS EXPECT OF Salem United Methodist Church?
MAGNIFY: celebrate God's presence in worship.
MISSION: communicate God's Word through evangelism and incorporate God's family into our fellowship.
MEMBERSHIP: We incorporate God's family into our fellowship.
MATURITY: educate God's people through discipleship.
MINISTRY: demonstrate God's love through service.
Worship at Salem
Worship at Salem has a traditional structure and we use the recent United Methodist Hymnal. Casual dress is acceptable. Children's Church is available after the Children's Sermon.
We gather as an entire body of all ages in the sanctuary. We begin worship together until the Children's Sermon. At that point, the children ages up to 6 years of age may attend Children's Church on the third floor behind the sanctuary. Of course, this is not mandatory in any way. If you feel your child would be better served there, fine. If not, they may remain in the sanctuary with our blessing. Preacher Don believes it is a good thing to hear kids in the sanctuary. They keep us young.
Mrs. Katie Bradley is organizing this event. Individuals helping lead this are free to make arrangements to trade times if they foresee a conflict with scheduling. Leaders: if you have a problem arise please call Katie Bradley at 439-8473.

We have begun our first Disciple Bible Study. In the future, we hope to have several other Disciple Bible Study classes. Underlying the development of DISCIPLE is the assumption that people are hungry for the word of God, for fellowship in prayer and study, and for a sense of appropriate ministry as baptized, believing, committed Christians." Include in your prayers the question if you are one of those people who should take such a step.
DISCIPLE assumes that the Bible is the key to renewal in the church.
DISCIPLE recognizes the human-divine nature of the Bible: The actual texts of Scripture were written by human beings like ourselves in their cultural settings, under the divine inspiration of God.
DISCIPLE gives Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as the revelation of God.
DISCIPLE aims at transformation, not just information.
DISCIPLE calls on persons to submit themselves to examination by Scripture, to put themselves under the power of God's word, and to be changed by God's word. "DISCIPLE invites persons to bring their experiences and struggles to Scripture. All persons know something is amiss with their existence and yearn for a word from God.
The program limits a group to twelve persons plus the leader. DISCIPLE requires commitment in terms of preparation, presence, and participation for all involved. Our pastor's commitment will include attendance at a mandatory three-day training seminar. He will spend three and a half to four hours of independent study each week in preparation for the weekly study sessions. His commitment also includes attendance at, guidance of, and participation in an orientation session and all thirty-four of the two and one-half hour weekly study sessions.
The group member's commitment will include 1)three to four hours of independent study each week (at least thirty minutes daily) in preparation for the weekly study session and 2)attendance at and participation in an orientation session and all thirty-four of the weekly study sessions.
Those who complete the course, having attended at least thirty of the sessions, and prepared for all, will be given a certificate of recognition and a DISCIPLE lapel pin.
DISCIPLE is based on the model of Jesus and the twelve disciples. Pastors and laypersons are invited to study in small groups of twelve and should include potential leaders in their church who are persons with spiritual commitment, open minds, and a hunger for studying the Scripture. The makeup of the group should include a mixture of present and potential leaders, a mixture of ages (for youth groups, tenth grade and up), serious inquirers who are not yet church members, singles and (where possible) couples in order for couples to grow together in their spiritual lives.
This program is made available through The United Methodist church, but its emphasis is ecumenical, that is, the Christian church rather than any sectarian emphasis.
If interested, call (828-433-6600) or E-mail the church.
